This year's YP Cup will be a kickball tournament at Action Sports!  UpDayton is hosting a team and we need a minimum of 10 players and a maximum of 20, with our team having at least 5 female players and 5 male players in order for us to qualify.  Registration starts at 9:30am and the first game is at 10am!

All proceeds of the event will go to support Dayton's CRAYONS TO CLASSROOMS! In addition to monetary support, the overarching goal of the YP Cup is to donate over 1,000 items of school supplies to support the essential learning tools needed by our local teachers and youth for the upcoming school year.  New and gently used supplies are requested, with 1 point awarded to our team for each item donated and 15 for a backpack - lets show them what UpDayton can do!

ITEMS NEEDED: 24-count crayon packs, marker packs, scissors, folders, filler paper, pencils, notebooks, glue/glue sticks, construction paper, rulers, pens, backpacks and more! To learn more about this great local charity or how else you can help, go to: http://dc2c.org/about-us/

STEAM Lab Site Tour and Cleanup Day!

We are moving forward full STEAM ahead!  We could use your help getting the STEAM Lab ready for the fall session; please join us this Sunday, August 5th, from 2-4pm at the lab site in the DeSoto Bass apartment complex for our first West Dayton Strong Full STEAM Ahead Site Tour and Clean Up Day!

The DeSoto Bass Community building is located at 811 Oldfield Avenue (this is the reference address if you are using GPS).  Some additional directions to help you out; turn onto Oldfield Ave. off of Germantown Street; proceed on Oldfield and turn into the 2nd driveway on the left, parking along the curb.  You will see a small brick building on your left beyond the iron fence.

Volunteers should meet at the community building and then the STEAM Lab project leaders will lead everyone to the apartment just across the yard.  Please contact Project Leader, Tiffany Brown at (937) 815-1719 and/or RSVP for any questions.

STEAM Lab Update:

The STEAM Lab just finished up with their summer programming and was able to get the A/C working in the lab (it was broken most of the summer)!

The amazing West Dayton Strong Summer programming provided youth between ages 3-14 living in the DeSoto Bass community, with several opportunities to broaden their artistic, mathematical, scientific and engineering minds through multiple events and mentors!  Some STEAM-inspired projects and activities this summer include: drones, urban garden tours, seed planting, nutrition, chef-led cooking demos, slime making, animal science, music/rhythm sessions, arts/crafts sessions, and marshmallow engineering! STEAM Lab thanks all of our volunteers and partners who helped make the summer an exciting and educational experience!

Dayton Ballet invites you to Dayton's biggest and best holiday performance arts tradition: Dayton Ballet's beloved The Nutcracker.

With magical choreography by Artistic Director Karen Russo Burke, delectable sets by designer Ray Zupp, and stunning costumes by Lowell Mathwich, the story of little Clara and her adventures in the Land of Sweets comes to life on the Mead Theatre Stage.
Dayton Ballet's The Nutcracker comprises an enormous cast, including the full professional Dayton Ballet company, dancers from Dayton Ballet II and the Dayton Ballet School, and over 100 children from the local Dayton area!

The Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Neal Gittleman, again takes up residence in the orchestra pit, giving Tchaikovsky's music the full, rich, gorgeous interpretation that it requires. The elegance, grace and sheer athleticism of Dayton Ballet's core ensemble and star dancers bring the drama to immediate, colorful life.
Before the performances and during intermissions, the Schuster Center Wintergarden bustles with the excitement of the holiday season.  Find the perfect holiday gift at the Dayton Ballet Boutique, peer into the famous whimsical Rike's window boxes, or treat yourself with candy and ice cream at the Graeter’s Sweet Shoppe.

With ten performances so close to the Christmas holiday, The Nutcracker is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate with family and guests. Make this enchanting story ballet a part of your family's holiday tradition!

Grapes of Gratitude benefitting UpDayton

  • Normandy Banquet and Event Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Grapes of Gratitude helps charities to conduct competitive wine tastings where even the loser gets to take something home. The competition is based on what we call the “Rule of Three.” Huh?

3 BOTTLES FOR EACH TEAM OF UP TO 3

A different wine varietal (such as chardonnay, merlot, pinot noir, etc.) is featured at each event. Teams, consisting of 1 to 3 participants, are admitted by bringing 3 bottles of the same featured varietal to the event. For example, for the Dec 2017 event the featured varietal is SPARKLING WINE, your team could bring 3 bottles of the La Marca DOC Prosecco Extra Dry.

At the event, 2 of each team’s 3 bottles are bagged, tagged and ranked by each participant. The 3rd bottle is set aside and left unopened. The teams that brought the 5 highest ranked wines divvy up each team’s 3rd unopened bottle, except for the lowest ranked wine which will be returned to the team that brought it. If 2 or more teams bring the same wine, rankings can still differ depending upon the temperature of the wine, how long it has been open, etc. Must be present to win.

Please remember, teams can consist of 1 to 3 participants. Thus, a group of 4 participants, for example, will be considered 2 teams and must bring 6 bottles of the featured varietal to enter the event. Still don’t get it? Just remember, the “Rule of Three,” which is visually depicted above.

Our charity partner for the March Grapes of Gratitude is UpDayton, a young professional organization with a mission to:

* To harness the creative talent of all people in the Miami Valley to make our region a better place to live
* To connect our young creatives and engage them in the region’s decision making
* To restore community to our communities
* To build pride and hope in our region

Grapes of Gratitude is made possible by Arrow Wine.
